your membership journey

step one: the apprentice

If you’ve never performed sabrage with us before, come along to one of our events and we’ll teach you. You will be carefully instructed by a cheerful, experienced sabrage instructor, and we’ll give you any pictures and videos that we take, as well as a certificate acknowledging you as an Apprentice, and confirming when and where you performed your first sabrage, under whose instruction, and the bottle that you used.

There’s a small fee to become an Apprentice, but this is waived should you decide to take up membership of The Society of the Silver Sword on the same day. And you will need to become a member in order to continue your journey, which we’re sure you’ll want to do…

step two: the practitioner

The next step is to become a Practitioner: a member who can perform sabrage without assistance. Our instructors will still be nearby to witness, can be consulted beforehand, and will step in if they have any safety concerns, but your moment of glory will be a solo act. You will be awarded your next certificate, and you will be eligible to purchase Practitioner apparel and merchandise. There are several additional Practitioner ‘unlocks’, but you will learn about these on your journey!

step three: the master

If you are a Practitioner and want to take your interest to the ultimate level, you can apply to become one of our instructors—a true Master of the art of sabrage. This involves attending a training course where you will learn about the history, art, and science of sabrage. Instructor training includes a practical assessment that proves you can teach sabrage to others, and handle all aspects of sabrage event organisation. There is additional apparel and merchandise available to holders of this qualification, and we will go to great lengths to help you celebrate this achievement.

As one of our instructors, you are covered by our £10MM public liability insurance policy when teaching sabrage, and can issue Apprentice certificates in your own name. You can officiate at Silver Sword events, be hired for our private bookings, and bring sabrage to your own events. Put another way, our instructors are entitled—indeed, actively encouraged—to teach sabrage whenever they like!
