As many of you know, we decided to found The Society of the Silver Sword at the start of 2026, to celebrate English sparkling wine and the timeless joy of the art of sabrage, and to build a welcoming and diverse community of people who want to learn more about the English wine scene, and have a lot of fun while doing it.
We had almost everything we needed. We had friends who were passionate about English sparkling wine, some of whom were already experienced sabrage instructors—and every time we went to a winery with sword in hand we recruited a few more like-minded individuals who wanted to join us on our journey. We met a stellar selection of winemakers who kindly agreed to be founding partners. And we had a vast array of sabres with which to open bottles and start giving people superpowers.
They just weren’t all silver, which posed something of a branding challenge when launching The Society of the Silver Sword.
Fortunately, we managed to convince a fantastic swordsmith with whom we had worked in the past to make a unique set of all-silver swords and scabbards for us, and to engrave our logo on them. He even kindly agreed to engrave our names on the tops of ours, and our partners’ logos on the other sides of theirs.
Suffice it to say that waiting for these swords to arrive took us back to the feeling a five-year-old experiences on being told their birthday is still a month away. But after an innumerable number of calendar, email, and tracking link checks—truly the adult equivalent of “are we nearly there yet?”—the day finally arrived.
We have had enormous fun showing them off and putting them to use at events. And we are so delighted with them that we are going to give our members the chance to order their own. Learn more below…
