If you have already got specifics (date, venue, numbers, format) in mind, let us know; if not, we’ll be more than happy to talk you through what’s possible, and to design a truly memorable event together!
If you’re not sure yet, this page provides some detail about our two most frequently asked questions: how does it work? and is it safe?. Have a look at this, and feel free to get in touch if you still have questions.
how does it work?
step one: plan the event
When you submit a booking enquiry, one of our instructors will contact you to learn more about your event. They will get to know you, learn what you have in mind, answer any questions, and assemble a proposal tailored to your requirements. In some cases this may mean simply setting a date, sorting out the logistics (see below on safety), turning up with a sword and a smile, and teaching your guests sabrage as part of pre-dinner entertainment. In other cases, this may mean walking you through a selection of possible formats and planning a bespoke event together, which can include recommending venues, wines, caterers, and photographers. We are extremely flexible, so can play as small or large a role as you need us to!
step two: enjoy the event
On the day, our instructor(s) will ensure that everything is ready for a seamless sabrage spectacular. They will introduce themselves, and can, if required, give a brief, amusing talk, covering anything from the history of sabrage to the finer points of the science that makes it possible. They will then guide your guests through sabrage one by one, in a separated space close (and perpendicular) to your reception area, so other guests can watch and take pictures/videos safely while continuing to enjoy your hospitality. They can work with your photographer in advance to ensure optimum coverage of each act, or can provide a series of exciting cinematic ways to capture and immortalise your guests’ moments of glory.
When each guest completes their act of sabrage, they will receive a commemorative gift, including a certificate acknowledging them as an Apprentice of The Society of the Silver Sword. They will then be filled with the kind of joy that only comes from realising one can open a bottle of sparkling wine with a sword, and their recollections of your event will have an almost mythical, legendary quality to them. Meanwhile, you can get on with the most important part of your evening—enjoying yourself!
is it safe?
Yes! Our instructors are…
highly trained
All our sabrage instructors have attending our training course and passed a practical assessment that proves they can not only teach sabrage to others, but handle all aspects of sabrage event organisation. You can learn more about them on our membership page, but suffice it to say that, by the time we have certified them, they have experience organising events of all shapes, sizes, and formats.
fully insured
Instructors are covered by The Society of the Silver Sword’s £10MM public liability insurance policy. Most venues do not require this as they are happy to use their own insurance, but we have this additional level of cover—which is way above the industry standard—to help put the minds of more conservative venue teams at ease. We have taught sabrage in castles, Livery Halls, museums, hotels, private members’ Clubs, and venues with priceless artwork on display. We have never had to claim on our insurance policy, but its existence helps show that we are serious about the safety of venues and guests.
obsessed with your safety
Silver Sword instructors take all elements of health and safety extremely seriously, so you and your guests can focus on enjoying yourselves. They are available for video and in-person consultations before booking, and at any point in the run-up to the event. They will get to know you, your needs, and your venue, will help you identify the perfect spot for sabrage instruction, and will perform a full, documented risk assessment. They will meet your staff, and give them a clear briefing to ensure they know how to handle bottles opened by sabrage. And they will personally walk your guests through sabrage one at a time, ensuring they have the best—and safest—possible experience as they learn the noble art.
